Why a famous Norwegian diesel fan now drives electric at his campsite
26. August 2025
Leif Einar Lothe – better known in Norway as “Lothepus” – has always been a diesel enthusiast. But at his campsite on the shores of the Hardangerfjord in Western Norway, he now zips around in a Norwegian-made electric Paxster. It runs quietly, does the job – and most importantly: the guests are happy. “When the kids have gone to bed, I can still drive around without disturbing anyone. That’s the best thing about it,” he says.

An electric eye-catcher at Lothepus Camping
The Hardangerfjord is known for its dramatic mountains and waterfalls, but visitors are now flocking to another attraction. Lothepus has built an entire destination here – with cabins, a pub, and even a full-scale stave church that houses the reception and an acclaimed restaurant called Langhuset.
The latest addition is an electric Paxster. When we visited the popular campsite, tourists stopped to take photos and pose with the distinctive little vehicle.
“I’m a diesel guy, but this one surprised me”.

Elise drives around daily with equipment and supplies, including bed linens for the cabins.
The model Lothepus uses at the campsite is a Paxster Cargo 2ndDrive – a previously used vehicle that has undergone a complete overhaul, with a new warranty and extended lifespan. Learn more about how we give Paxsters a new life.
Surprising versatility at the campsite
At Lothepus Camping, the Paxster has quickly become an everyday workhorse. Magne Svan, general manager of the restaurant Langhuset as well as another restaurant in the nearby town of Odda, uses it for transporting goods and running errands between the two places.
“It’s also perfect for catering deliveries – I love it”.

Elise at the reception uses it daily as well – to deliver bed linens to the cabins, restock the sanitary facilities, or simply get quickly from A to B.
“There’s almost a fight over who gets to use it”.

And when Lothepus organizes local festivals, the Paxster has even been used to haul ice cubes. “That just shows how versatile it is,” says Lothepus – a quality that is clearly valued.

Who would have thought that Lothepus would go electric?
When the guests are happy, Lothepus is happy
Although the Paxster can be used for countless tasks, one thing stands out as most important to Lothepus: silence. “The fact that I can drive around in the evenings after the kids have gone to bed without disturbing anyone – that’s what makes it worth going electric. Even for me,” he says.
“When the guests are happy, I am happy”.

At Lothepus Camping, the electric Paxster has become part of daily operations – from linen and catering to simply getting around the site. Above all, the experience here shows how such a vehicle can be used for far more than you might think – and all of it in near silence.
